The Palms Elderly Care Facility has been in existence since 1878. It is Guyana’s oldest elderly residential facility located on Brickdam. This Institution is governed by the Poor Relief Act Chapter 36:02, which was enacted to “make provision for the relief of the poor”. The Palms is managed by an Administrator who oversees its daily operations, a Matron who is responsible for patient care and a Social Worker who provides psycho-social counselling. The Palms Elderly Care Facility works within clearly set boundaries and standards which requires that a person may be admitted only on the recommendations of the Social Worker and in-house Gerontologist. Persons will not be refused based on their race, religion, sexual orientation or disability.

Services provided at the Institution

  • Provides personal care.
  • Provide free accommodation and meals.
  • Provide free medical services.
  • Provide recreational and social activities.

Admission Requirements

Before a person can be admitted, the following must be submitted:

  • An application (written or typed)
  • A medical report from a medical Institution or medical practitioner.
  • A copy of their birth certificate and ID card 

A pre-assessment will be done by our Social Worker and Gerontologist before admission.

How a person can become a Resident at the Palms

  • Persons must be 60 years of age and above.
  • Older persons who are victims of neglect, abuse, exploitation, etc.
  • Older persons who are homeless.
