Adoption Unit
Ministry of Human Services and Social Security has within its department of the Childcare and Protection Agency, the Adoption Unit. The Unit provides adoption services to Applicants pursuing adoptions in Guyana. It is mandated by Article 21 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and Chapter 46:04 of the Adoption of Children Act, to ensure that the best interest of the child is of paramount consideration.
Since Adoption is a substitutive alternative care for children, its alternative is to provide suitable family care for children after it has been determined that the child can no longer be reunited with his/her family of origin or cannot be cared for by members of the family.

has adopted a child, whether in pursuance of an
adoption order or otherwise...
The services provided by the Unit
- facilitate the processing of applications for adoption
- prepare pre-adoption reports for children in need of permanent families
- provide psychosocial support to children
- provide psychological and psychiatric evaluations for children
- provide referrals for Legal Advice by Practitioners, for birth parents during the Adoption process
- intervene in pre and post Adoption matters
- facilitate and oversee the functions of the Adoption Board
- prepare pre-adoption reports for the Court and the Adoption Board
- host monthly statutory Adoption Board Meetings
- network with relevant Agencies to access services for children, including the location of birth parents
