Key Responsibilities

  • The Foster Care Department is responsible for the functioning of the Foster Care Programme, which is a six-month temporary alternative care service, catering for children on emergency, short and long-term bases. These children suffered abuse, neglect or abandonment.
  • The primary responsibility of Foster Parents is to protect and nurture in a family environment, a child/children who are their family members or are not their biological or adopted children. The environment provides needs such as supervision, love, stability, emotional support, guidance and daily sustenance, until the child/children are reunified or reintegrated.
  • The Social Workers conduct regular visits to ensure foster children remain in a conducive environment and give support to Foster Parents.
  • The Department assesses potential foster parents and families through investigations, medical examination done by professionals to ascertain health capabilities, Police searches, home inspection, submission of character references, interviews and parenting training for eligibility. When persons have attained the criteria, a child is placed into their care under a written agreement between the Agency and the Foster Parent.
